License Types Explained

When you buy a digital product on a marketplace, you're not buying the source code outright — you're buying a license to use it under specific terms. Understanding these terms protects both buyers and sellers.

Regular License

A Regular License allows you to use the product in a single end product that is not sold to end users. This covers personal websites, internal tools, client projects (one-time delivery), and portfolio sites.

Extended License

An Extended License allows you to use the product in a single end product that is sold or offered as a service. This covers SaaS applications, products sold to multiple customers, subscription services, and apps with paid downloads.

When You Need Extended

The key question is: will end users pay to use your product? If yes, you need an Extended License. If you're building a SaaS where customers pay monthly, an Extended License is required.

For Sellers: Why Offer Both?

Offering both license types lets you capture more of the market. Individual developers and freelancers will buy Regular. Companies and SaaS founders will pay premium for Extended. The price difference is typically 3-5x.

Common Misconceptions

A Regular License does NOT mean you can only use it once and throw it away. You can modify, customize, and maintain the product. You just can't resell it or use it as the basis for a commercial service.

Protecting Your Work

Neither license transfers copyright. The original creator retains ownership of the source code. The buyer gets usage rights, not ownership. This is standard practice across all digital marketplaces.
